Understanding Time Zones and UTC

Current UTC Time

What is a Time Zone?

A time zone is a region where the same standard time is used. Time zones are centered on lines of longitude, with a standard difference of one hour per 15 degrees of longitude.

History of Time Zones

The concept of time zones was first proposed by Sir Sandford Fleming in the late 19th century. Before this, local mean time was used, which varied from town to town.

What is UTC?

UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the time standard that regulates clocks and time worldwide. It does not change with the seasons, unlike local time zones, and is the same worldwide.
